One Year Anniversary And Some Reflections

Sinotology 1 year anniversary

One year ago today, I launched Sinotology with its first few shirts. I really didn’t know much about what I was getting into but that this was something I wanted to do for a long time, so I went into the venture with excitement. Sinotology is a product of three parts: my passion for design and illustration, my love of t-shirts, and my Chinese ethnicity. Creating a business out of these seemed a no-brainer, but maintaining a business was what I had to learn fast.

Running a t-shirt line is really hard work. If you build it they will not come. You have to constantly push your name out there for people to notice. The t-shirt industry is a very saturated market and I thought that since I had a specific niche, Chinese t-shirts, customers would find me. That is not the case. Marketing is just as important a part of running a business as product design. No one will find you in this vast ocean. You have to do the finding.

However, running my own t-shirt brand is a very rewarding experience. Not only am I doing what I really want to do, but having people buy my products, and having repeat customers, validate the effort I’ve put into the business so far. It just pushes me harder to put out more products. Every artist seeks, on some level, acceptance of his art. Having people buy my shirts is that acceptance for me and I’m super excited about it.

I plan to do much more in this second year. For starters there will be more shirts coming out. Also, I’m looking to grow the brand and evolve its aesthetic. How? I’m not sure yet but I’m really excited to start planning! Here’s to year two!

More Pics From My Taiwan Trip

I’m back in the US now but I want to post some more pics from Taiwan. The trip was absolutely a blast. Not only did I get to see and do a lot of cool things but I also got a lot of inspiration for shirt designs. I’m definitely going to miss all the good cheap food, night markets, and most of all the friendly people there. I need to start planning my next trip.

One Year Anniversary Sale!

1 Year Anniversary Sale

On June 1 Sinotology will be 1 year old and to celebrate why not have another sale? The vacation sale just ended and I thought it would be pointless to have a week of regular prices and then another sale. So I decided to start the anniversary sale immediately after the vacation sale and have it run for two weeks. I will reflect on this first year in another post. I’ve really learned a lot.

Starting today all shirts are just $15. Sale ends on June 10. Pick up a shirt today!

Doodling Ideas For the Next Shirt
May is here and I’d like the next shirt to be released soon, so I did some really quick sketches to figure out which design to use next. One of these will be the basis for the next release. Can you guess which?
On a side note I’m really horrible at these quick sketches. I’ve seen sketchbooks of other artists and their quick studies are absolutely badass. I need to get to their level. Practice, practice, practice!

My Taiwan Trip So Far

A little under two weeks into the trip and I’m having a blast in Taiwan! So far I’ve split my time between Taipei and Taichung. I’m doing it all from night markets to delicious food to visiting old places from my childhood (as well as my family’s childhood!). I’ve even connected with some childhood friends who I thought I’d never hear from again! I really can’t ask for much more but here’s hoping the next two weeks will be filled with just as much awesomeness. Enjoy the photos!

East Dragon West Dragon Exhibit

The other day I headed over to Gallery Nucleus to check out the East Dragon West Dragon exhibit by Scott Campbell. It was great! The pieces are all watercolor paintings (some very detailed) and tell a story about these two very different dragons—one from the East and the other from the West. One rule I have for Sinotology is to not do any designs with dragons unless they are really creative. These paintings would definitely fit in that category. Definitely check out this exhibit if you’re in the area.

I especially love the dragon singing karaoke in the last photo!

Full Preview of Next T-Shirt: AIYA!
A while ago I showed you a sneak peek of the next tee. Now it’s time to show you everything: AIYA!!! (哎呀) This is the go-to phrase that every Chinese person uses whenever something bad happens. Late to work? Aiya! Stubbed your big toe? Aiya! Didn’t buy a Sinotology shirt? AIYA! It’s very versatile too. You can draw it out in a low voice as if signaling some foreboding danger—aaaiiyaaaaaaaaa….Or you can let it out as a primal scream when you’re in a fit of pain—AAAAIIIYAAAAAAAA!!!! All around it’s fun stuff.
This shirt will be released some time next week and will also be part of the giant sale going on now. Bear in mind that after April 21, it will be shipped on May 25. Aiya!
